Mothering the garden

Straw panic

There was a threat of frost, or at least really low temperatures, last night. I hurriedly spread a bale of straw over the tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, and then spent the night worrying about everything else out there. (It only got down to 45*.)

Ah. I will be happily spending the day out there, attending to many tasks and creating new gardens. I hope all the rest of you moms out there have as lovely a day ahead of you!

I hate the threat of spring frost after I've planted the garden!

You are ahead of me. I am hardening off my tomatoes and peppers and will plant the whole garden on Thursday/Friday of this coming week. I'm looking forward to it!

Happy Mother's Day!
I'm amazed that you can just go out and strew hay.
When we get freeze warnings here, I just bring the potted plants indoors and throw plastic sheets over the rest. What a difference five acres vs. -- oh -- 300 square feet. Hey! I'm working on it.

Ah, Carol, but your flowers are way ahead of mine. Call me risky, but those seedlings were calling out for real dirt.

And CC: I saw your tomato! Your priorities are dead-on. But you get frost in California? (j.k.)

You're ahead of me too. But in this case I'm grateful. We did get the frost. My mom who's just really started gardening and has babied her tomato seedlings since Feb. lost all hers. I cover my beds with row covers so my lettuces were safe. Won't be long!! :)
