More rain today, yesterday, tomorrow...


We have found something else that likes all this rain. This is an Amanita mushroom. Poisonous. As you can see, they can get pretty big. I conscripted our toddler Saturday to be used for scale in the photo below. These things are appearing about 3 weeks earlier than usual.

That's a scary looking 'shroom. I don't know my fungi, so steer clear of the lot of them. However, I would like to learn how to positively ID chanterelles... we found one once and even did a spore test to double check. Now if I could only remember where...

Michael Pollan (demigod) in his latest book goes mushroom hunting. Seems like you really need to be taught by someone experienced so you can get over what he calls "mycophobia"! We have some wild somethings that also grow on our land that neighbors down the road come and harvest. Haven't seen them get sick, but then, haven't seen them eat them, either...
