You are getting sleepy

I am not cultivating fields of these things, but did you ever wonder why the DEA doesn't come down hard on red-blooded American gardeners about their poppies? Okay, okay; the fastidious amongst you will say this is Papaver orientale that I am growing in my front yard, not P. somniferum (the opiate). I don't know. They look the same.

But if I had to rely on this as a cash crop, I would starve. They don't like this hard soil. So when they do grow and bloom, I get all dreamy.

I love red poppies. We have tons of annual Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) that volunteer each year. I need to be a bit more ruthless in the weeding, though... they have a tendency to take over.

I love poppies too, although I don't have any. Every year I intend to plant some, but it never happens. A farmer near us has bright orange poppies at the edges of his fields along the road and they are so pretty to look at every morning.

Ooooo! I clicked on your poppy and zow! A HUGE picture appeared and now I am so, so, sleepy...I can barely think of the words to say how much I enjoy your blog.

We have an old black and white photo of my DH's grandmother in a huge field of poppies here at the homestead. I always wonder when I see it if she's wearing red shoes. :) That and what they needed all the poppies for. Although I have inherited an ancient poppy seed grinder.I've never had any luck growing them either though.

Liz, I had Flanders AND California poppies that also reseeded themselves...but this was at our city house. Sniff, they didn't make it here.

Meredith, get buying! Or at least befriend that farmer.

Moonbear, thanks for stopping by, and I am so glad you like this blog. And I am glad to meet another clothesline addict.

Farm mom, wow, a poppy seed grinder? How did you ever figure out what it was? But I like the image of a field of poppies.
